Our families discover and develop strong connection with each other through our family picnics, working bees, end of term celebration days and due to our welcoming atmosphere where they feel free to spend time and chat with each other.

We also have close affiliations with other community groups and services in our area.

Throughout the year we visit the school for a variety of purposes including regular library sessions, special assemblies, celebration days, excursions to the canteen, shows and visiting entertainers, and visits to the Kindergarten classrooms.

Along with building our relationship with the school, our preschoolers get a taste for what school is like. They become confident with where to go for help, where to go to the toilet and become familiar with the teachers, principal and office staff. They also get to know what it’s like to hang out with children who are often twice their size!

In 2019, both Preschool groups will attend an excursion to Tropical Fruit World in Duranbah, Northern NSW. The Preschool Educators, the children and their families are treated to a Farm Tour that includes a journey through the orchards by tractor train on the Plantation Safari, a Wildlife Boat Cruise where they can relax and enjoy the waterways. They will also be able to meet farm animal friends, kangaroos and emus in the Fauna Park and sample and learn about seasonal fruits during the Fruit Tasting Session.

In 2017 we participated in Tweed Shire Council's Second Hand Saturday!

Families donated second hand goods to be sold in a Shire wide event.

It was so good to see Scrapboy join us to rummage through the second hand items and find some bargains!

We hope to participate in this event every year!

Each year we have a visit from Sascha from Tweed Shire Council to talk to us about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Sascha talks to us about the effects of rubbish on our environment and ways we can reduce waste by using less one-use-only items such as plastic wrap or plastic bags; choose packaging that can be reused or reuse items for craft; or to recycle things through our Yellow bins.

At preschool & OOSH we have introduced yellow and red bins in the playroom, bathroom and kitchen to help us recycle.  We also have litter-less lunches to reduce waste. We also have a huge craft basket for families to bring in cardboard packaging for us to reuse in our craft.

Other ways we are helping our environment include:

  • Collecting food scraps for chickens

  • Using both sides of paper

  • turning the lights and fans off when we're not inside

  • Thinking about how much water we use in play - we have a water tank ready to install over the Christmas holidays that will further help us to reduce water wastage.

For many of our children one of the highlights of the year is a visit from our local firefighters.

They arrive in their fire engine giving our children a close-up look inside the fire engine and at the equipment they use.

Experiences such as this broaden children's understanding of the world around them, teaches them fire safety and highlights the value of working together as a community.

Environmental responsibility is part of our philosophy. By leading by example we hope to teach our families to be good caretakers of the land.

Rainbow Eagle is an experienced performer and storyteller who, with his puppet friends, visits us every year to help spread the message of looking after the earth.

He uses stories, music and dance to teach children about the elements, what makes food grow and how special life is.

Each year children and parents gather in Recreation Park, Tweed Heads to highlight and promote Child Protection Week. This year's Teddy Bear Picnic was hosted by Tweed Shire Women's Service and Majella House. In 2014, we went along to join in the fun with over 20 parents joining us for the day.

We brought picnic baskets and blankets to sit down and take in the atmosphere of live music. The children were entertained with free balloons, craft activities, games to play, face painting and glitter tattoos.

We also got to sit behind the wheel of the local police car, ambulance and fire trucks - including our very own Bilambil Rural Fire Brigade!

What a great day out!
